Shedding Light on the Recall: Who? What? When? Why?

Who is being recalled?

Elise Scafani

Elected to the Blue Lake City Council in the fall of 2022 for a 4 year term that will end in December 2026. Elise stepped up to serve our community at a critical time in Blue Lake's history. We are faced with many very important decisions that will shape our town for decades to come. Elise has worked hard to bring important information to the public and promote responsible and fully informed decision making. She asks the hard questions and consistently advocates for the best outcome for Blue Lake.

What is a recall election?

A recall election is a tool used by voters to remove an elected official from office before the end of their term. Theoretically, this should occur in situations where wrongdoing has occurred.

  • What degree of evidence or wrongdoing should justify a recall?
  • When does a recall serve the public good and when does it serve political interests?
  • How can we ensure recalls are used responsibly rather than as a tool for partisanship?

The citizens of Blue Lake have an

important decision to make.

Where & When will we Vote?

The Humboldt county office of elections will conduct the election. Election day is January 6th. Voting will be done by mail and drop box. There will be no in person voting.

Voters will receive ballots in the mail approximately 30 days before election day and can vote any time on or before January 6, 2026.

Why should we vote No?

A NO vote is a vote for stability, respect for the process, and faith in our own choices as a community:

  • Vote NO to respect democratic governance.
It affirms that when we elect people to serve, they should be allowed to complete their full terms and carry out the will of the voters—not be cut short mid-course without compelling cause.

  • Vote NO to respect how our city government is designed to work.
In Blue Lake, policy direction comes from our elected City Council, and those decisions are implemented by the City Manager under the City of Blue Lake Municipal Code. A NO vote supports that structure instead of undermining it through constant upheaval.

  • Vote NO to respect the 2024 election results.
Our community spoke at the ballot box. A recall so soon after that decision disregards the outcome that voters just expressed.

  • Vote NO to respect the citizens who wanted      change.
Many residents voted with the expectation that their chosen candidates would have time to pursue improvements in transparency, fiscal responsibility, and long-term planning.  A NO vote honors that expectation.

  • Vote NO to show we believe in our elected      officials and our town.
It says we want our leaders focused on doing the work of Blue Lake—not fighting for their political survival—and that we trust the normal election cycle, not recalls, as the primary way to make changes.

In short, a NO vote is a vote for honoring our own voice as voters, giving our elected officials the chance to do the job we elected them to do, and keeping Blue Lake moving forward instead of mired in constant conflict.
